Canyon Creek

This hike is EPIC! THIS SHOULD BE A MULTIPLE DAY BACKPACKING TRIP! We made the mistake of doing this all in one day (it's possible) & we both feel like it was not enough time to sit and relax to enjoy all the marvelous scenery around us. We left our house in Eureka around 5:30 am and got to the trail at 9 am so we only had enough time to reach the bottom of the first lake. There was a few waterfalls, amazing redwoods and gorgeous lakes at the top as a much needed reward. For about half the hike you will be along the river and then it's just a matter of following trail heads.

Distance: ~17 miles to the second lake

Elevation:~3500 ft

Dogs: Yes!

*Buster did great but please bring lots of water for your pups*

How to get there

Right off of 299 in Junction City will be Canyon Creek road and you will follow that all the way until it deals ends (~13 miles). You will drive through a little bit of Junction City's history in an old town called Dedrick. This used to be an old mining town where you can see old foundations of houses made of stone as you drive. If you blink, you will miss it so keep your eyes peeled. At the dead end, you will see a parking lot and that is where the trail starts!

The Hike

Once you start the hike, there will be a sign that has arrows pointing to Bear Creek and Canyon Creek trails, make sure you start on Canyon Creek trail.

Within your first mile, you will have to cross over the river. It was small when we went but I heard it can get pretty high durning summer seasons, then start your ascent. Around the halfway point, you will be rewarded with a beautiful waterfall! We stopped, had water and a small snack and headed back on the trail.

Get back on the trail for a few miles and you will get to a point where the path isn't completely clear. Look to your right for an arrow on the ground (made of rocks) and a trail head. Then the switchbacks going up continue again. Once you reach the granite rocks, go directly straight and then look to your right for more switchbacks. Once you hit the switch backs, you will get a beautiful view of saw tooth.
